The convict history of Australia is a harsh story with many transported from the UK for minor crimes due to the burgeoning prison population in England.  Harsh conditions on board the lengthy ocean journey and even poorer treatment on their arrival, where whipping with a cat of nine tails was common.

Many convicts were granted their freedom and went on to establish prosperous new lives in Australia the majority of Grant’s who emigrated to Australia did so as paid passengers, and have done so for the entirety of this countries history.
